Course overview

Intensive preparation for experienced sailors who already meet the mileage, passage and theory requirements for a Yachtmaster practical examination.

The preparation normally runs Monday to Friday before an examination conducted by an external RYA examiner.

Candidates should arrive already operating at a high practical and theoretical standard.

Experience & eligibility

What you need

  • Substantial qualifying sea time and miles, with a number of skippered passages and night hours.
  • Sailing experience and decision-making well beyond Day Skipper level.
  • A valid first aid certificate and marine VHF/SRC radio licence by the time of the exam.

Recommended first

  • Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster shore-based theory completed beforehand.

Yachtmaster requires real, logged sea time and is assessed by an external RYA examiner. These are a guide, not a fixed requirement. We confirm your eligibility with you personally before the course, so please get in touch if you are unsure whether this course is right for you — we will help you find the right starting point.

Before you join

  • Minimum 2,500 nautical miles logged, with at least half in tidal waters.
  • Five passages of at least 60 nautical miles, including two as skipper and two involving night sailing.
  • Theory knowledge to Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore level.
  • A valid SRC/VHF operator certificate and accepted first-aid certificate.
