RYA ICC – Sail

Unlike the UK, most European countries require the Skipper of any vessel to provide proof of competency on request, and this is where the ICC can be useful, as it is recognised under a United Nations convention.
In Spanish coastal waters, as in most European waters, it is a legal requirement that the skipper of any vessel is in possession of an appropriate licence, and the UK ICC is accepted by the Maritime Guardia Civil. The ICC is accepted by most charter companies as evidence of a skipper’s competency. Please note however, that many charter companies also require at least one member of the crew to be in possession of a valid SRC (VHF) operator’s licence. Click here for further information.
The RYA are authorised by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency to issue an ICC to any British citizen and citizens of certain other countries (see below) provided they can demonstrate an acceptable level of competency. This can be done in either of two ways:
- Successfully complete the RYA Day Skipper practical course.
- Successfully complete an ICC assessment, click here for the syllabus.
It is unlikely that applicants without theoretical knowledge or practical experience equal to the relevant course level would successfully complete the assessment.
On successful completion of either the course or the assessment, it is up to the candidate to complete an ICC application form and forward it direct to the RYA who will issue the licence direct. The ICC for sail will allow the holder to skipper a vessel up to 24m loa. and will also allow the holder to skipper a motor boat up to 10m loa.
Costa Blanca Sailing can carry out the assessment on an owner’s boat provided that the boat is fully seaworthy, adequately equipped, and with all paperwork in order. Please contact us for further details.
