RYA Yachtmaster preparation and exam Motor Cruising Course in Spain

Passing the exam is often the first step that many seafarers will take before they go on to work within the marine industry,  the Certificate of Competence is recognised globally and allows the holder to skipper a vessel up to 150 miles from a safe haven. The exam is taken by an external  RYA examiner, and can last 36 hours, depending on the number of candidates. The Yachtmaster Offshore licence is also a pre-requisite for students wishing to apply for the Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence.

During the Monday to Friday preparation course, we review all aspects of the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in order to successfully pass the RYA Yachtmaster exam, but of course candidates should already be of a very high standard and should be able to meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 2500NM logged, half of which must have been in tidal waters.
  • 50 days at sea, at least 5 as Skipper.
  • 5 passages of at least 60NM, 2 of which as Skipper and 2 of which having involved night sailing.
  • Knowledge of theory to Yachtmaster Coastal / Offshore level.

Candidates will also need to be in possession of:

  • An SRC (VHF) operator’s certificate.*
  • A STCW 1st Aid certificate.*

(*) Costa Blanca Sailing can provide both the above as required at additional cost.</span>

Yachtmaster Coastal: Candidates who are not able to meet the criteria for the Offshore exam may wish to consider taking the Yachtmaster Coastal exam which allows the holder to skipper a vessel up to 60 miles from a safe haven. This licence can also be commercially endorsed.

Commercial Endorsement: Yachtmaster licences can be commercially endorsed allowing the holder to work within the marine industry. Applicants will need to provide a Medical fitness certificate, complete the online RYA PPR (Professional Practices and Responsibilities) which Costa Blanca Sailing can provide, and undertake an STCW Sea Survival Course. Further details regarding commercial endorsement are available on request.
